UltraTech aims for 200 mtpa capacity to cement market leadership

UltraTech Cement
Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman of UltraTech Cement, has unveiled plans to solidify the company's market dominance by boosting its capacity to 200 million tonnes per annum (mtpa). The groundwork for this strategic expansion has already commenced, with the next phase of growth underway. This move will elevate UltraTech's cement production capacity first to 160 million tonnes and subsequently to the remarkable goal of 200 million tonnes. This visionary leap will firmly establish UltraTech Cement as a global giant in the industry.

In a parallel drive, the Adani Group, having entered the building materials sector through its acquisitions of Ambuja Cements and ACC, is aggressively pursuing a capacity target of 140 million tonnes. This rapid acceleration in capacity development mirrors the impressive growth of the country's infrastructure landscape.

The impending acquisition of Sanghi will further enhance Adani's cement unit capacity, scaling up from 67.5 million tonnes to 73.6 million tonnes. UltraTech Cement, on the other hand, demonstrated remarkable growth, doubling its grey cement production capacity from 66 million tonnes in FY16 to an impressive 132 million tonnes in FY23. Additional increments of 12.4 million tonnes during FY23 and 5.5 million tonnes in FY24 have propelled UltraTech's total cement production capacity to 137.9 million tonnes.
