Infrastructure Projects Face Rs 5.65 Lakh Crore Cost Overrun in April: MoSPI

According to the latest Flash Report, the PAIMANA portal is currently tracking 1,981 infrastructure projects worth Rs 42.78 lakh crore across 17 ministries and departments. The cumulative expenditure incurred on these projects stands at Rs 20.36 lakh crore, accounting for nearly 47.59 per cent of the revised project cost.
The report stated that 801 projects, accounting for around 40 per cent of the total, have achieved over 80 per cent physical progress, while 277 projects have crossed 80 per cent financial completion.
The Transport & Logistics sector remains the largest infrastructure segment, accounting for 1,459 projects with a revised cost of Rs 23.34 lakh crore. The sector includes roads, highways, railways, aviation, ports and urban transport projects.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways leads in terms of project count with 1,137 projects valued at Rs 10.81 lakh crore, followed by Ministry of Railways with 260 projects worth Rs 8.69 lakh crore.
Other major infrastructure ministries include the Ministry of Power with projects worth Rs 5.53 lakh crore and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas with projects valued at Rs 5.19 lakh crore.
During April 2026, nine projects were commissioned across sectors including roads, railways, power and urban infrastructure. Key completed projects included a flyover and rail overbridge project in Nagpur valued at Rs 758.4 crore and a power transmission system for renewable energy evacuation in Rajasthan worth Rs 688.74 crore.
The report also noted that 55 new projects were added to the PAIMANA monitoring system during the month. These include the Rs 15,611 crore Bangalore Metro Rail Phase-3 project, the Rs 14,105.83 crore Kalai-II Hydro Electric Project, and the Rs 2,360 crore Zaheerabad industrial node project under the Hyderabad-Nagpur Industrial Corridor.
