Demag AC 700-9 Crane Executes Complex Bridge Lift in Mumbai

Demag AC 700-9 Crane
Steel Carriers Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd. successfully carried out a challenging lifting operation in Mumbai using its Demag AC 700-9, installing connecting bridge sections between two existing buildings in a highly confined urban space.

The lift required operation at extreme height and radius, demanding both precision and performance. “This was clearly a job where reach and precision were critical,” said Sunil Makad, Director of Steel Carriers. “The Demag AC 700-9 gave us the confidence to execute the lift safely, even under very demanding site conditions.”

The challenge: Long radius lift in a narrow corridor
The project required lifting relatively lightweight bridge sections of approximately 4 tonnes, using a total boom length of 133 meters, at a working radius of up to 90 meters. While the load itself was modest, the real challenge lay in the environment: two existing buildings formed a narrow corridor with very limited clearance for both crane positioning and load movement.

Operating at such a long radius added further complexity, as maintaining stability and precise control of the load was essential throughout the entire lifting process.

To meet these demands, Steel Carriers configured the AC 700-9 with a 45.5-meter main boom, a 4-meter adapter for the luffing configuration, and an 84-meter luffing jib, combined with 120 tonnes of counterweight in WIHI configuration. This setup provided the required reach while ensuring safe and controlled lifting operations.

The solution: Flexibility and control
The Demag AC 700-9 proved to be ideally suited for the task thanks to its advanced engineering and versatile boom system. Its luffing jib configuration enabled precise load positioning, even within the tight spatial constraints of the jobsite.

At the same time, the crane’s strong performance at long radii ensured that the lifts could be carried out safely and efficiently. The modular boom and jib combinations allowed the team to adapt the crane perfectly to the challenging site geometry.

“The crane’s flexibility and reliability played a key role,” says Sunil Makad. “Even at a 90-meter radius, we had full control of the load at all times.”

Efficient execution on site
The crane and supporting equipment were transported from Steel Carriers’ Mumbai yard to the jobsite within a single day, using a 55-tonne all terrain support crane and ten trailers carrying the crane components and accessories. Once on site, the experienced crew had the AC 700-9 fully assembled and ready for operation in just two days.

Despite the tight working conditions, the lifting operations were carried out smoothly using slewing movements to position the load accurately. The combination of skilled operators and the crane’s responsive controls ensured that each lift was completed according to plan.

A strong team performance
The entire project, from assembly to lifting operations and dismantling, was completed within 20 days. A dedicated crew, supported by a site supervisor, managed the operation efficiently and safely throughout.

“The performance of the crane and the expertise of our team made all the difference,” concludes Sunil Makad. “Once again, Demag technology helped us deliver exactly as promised, even in the most challenging conditions.”
