India to Add 8,000 MW Nuclear Power Capacity as 11 Reactors Progress Under Construction

India is set to add 8,000 MW of nuclear power capacity to the national grid as 11 nuclear reactors under construction progress towards commissioning, the government informed Parliament.

Among the ongoing projects, the 700 MW Rajasthan Atomic Power Project (RAPP)-7 commenced commercial operations on April 15, 2026, while RAPP-8 is in the advanced stage of commissioning and is expected to become operational later this year.

The under-construction projects include two 700 MW units at Gorakhpur, Haryana (GHAVP-1 & 2), two 700 MW units at Kaiga, Karnataka (Kaiga-5 & 6), the 500 MW Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam, and four 1,000 MW Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) units in Tamil Nadu.

The government said delays in some projects were caused by post-Fukushima design changes, supply chain disruptions, the Covid-19 pandemic, delays in equipment supplies from Russia, contractor-related issues, difficult soil conditions, manpower shortages and geopolitical conflicts.

To accelerate project execution, the Department of Atomic Energy and NPCIL have strengthened project monitoring, streamlined decision-making, adopted bulk procurement of long-lead equipment, and increased coordination with contractors and suppliers to ensure timely completion.
