India Has 10 Nuclear Reactors Under Construction With 8,000 MW Capacity
In 2023-24, 10 reactors were under construction or commissioning. Since then, three reactors with a combined capacity of 2,100 MW have commenced commercial operations. These include the 700 MW each KAPP-3 and KAPP-4 units at Kakrapar in Gujarat and RAPP-7 at Rawatbhata in Rajasthan.
Construction has also commenced on Kaiga-5 and Kaiga-6 in Karnataka, adding 1,400 MW to the project pipeline.
The 10 reactors currently under construction include RAPP-8 in Rajasthan; KKNPP-3&4, KKNPP-5&6 and the 500 MW Fast Breeder Reactor at Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu; Kaiga-5&6 in Karnataka; and GHAVP-1&2 in Haryana.
The government said the SHANTI Act, enacted in 2025, will enable wider participation in India's nuclear power sector, including private industry and research institutions.
