Silkyara tunnel collapse sparks urgent rescue operation in Uttarakhand
National and State Disaster Response Forces promptly responded, launching rescue operations to extricate around 40 trapped laborers. Seeking food, the workers conveyed to officials that they were secure and had enough water for a few days. Oxygen is being pumped into the affected area through a pipeline to ensure their well-being.
Rescue teams drilled a pipe through the debris, facilitating communication with the trapped workers via a walkie-talkie. Rescue operations are underway, with the insertion of large-diameter mild steel pipes through the rubble using an auger machine. The workers are being provided with essential supplies, including food, water, and oxygen.
Disaster Management Secretary Ranjit Kumar Sinha, who visited the site, expressed optimism that the trapped laborers could be rescued by Tuesday night or Wednesday. In response to the incident, the Uttarakhand government formed a six-member expert committee to investigate the accident.
The tunnel, linking Silkyara and Dandalgaon in Uttarkashi district, witnessed collaborative efforts from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), police, and local administration personnel. Two JCBs and a Poclain machine are engaged in removing debris inside the 13-meter-wide tunnel, while an escape passage, approximately 60 meters away from the trapped workers, is being crafted.
Authorities are preparing a platform for an auger machine to drill horizontally, inserting large 900 mm diameter MS pipes amidst the debris. This innovative approach aims to create a passage for the trapped workers to be safely extracted through the metal pipes. The ongoing rescue operation reflects a determined endeavor to ensure the well-being and safe return of those affected by this unfortunate incident.
