Sustainable Road Construction in Hilly Region

Siksha Swaroopa Kar, Principal Scientist, Amit Kumar, Technical Officer, Krishan, Technician, Flexible Pavement Division, CSIR-CRRI, New Delhi, discuss mechanized laying of cold bituminous layer, the mixer and paver that have been fabricated, and the effectiveness of the fabricated machine.

Limited road connectivity in India’s mountainous and hilly regions poses a significant obstacle to economic growth. To achieve their strategic objectives, Himalayan border nations require a robust and resilient road network. However, conventional road construction techniques like hot mix asphalt may not be suitable for environmentally sensitive hilly regions. The challenging terrain and narrow construction sites make it difficult to transport materials and construction equipment. Additionally, there is insufficient space for setting up hot mix plants in these areas.
