KMRL starts work on Phase-III metro extension

The Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has commenced work on Phase-III of the metro rail project and has engaged a Delhi-based consultancy firm, Urban Mass Transit Company Limited (UMTC), to conduct a detailed study on the extension from Aluva to Kochi airport. KMRL Managing Director, Loknath Behera, expressed the organization's interest in collaborating with the Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) for the benefit of both parties, as the metro rail extension would significantly serve the airport.

Considering the involvement of both the central and state governments in the project, a partnership with CIAL would be advantageous. KMRL is exploring the possibility of implementing a model similar to the Paris Metro, wherein passengers can check in their luggage at the metro station itself before boarding their flights. Behera highlighted the potential benefits for Kochi's residents and tourists, emphasizing that the extension of the metro rail to the airport would help them save time, money, and avoid traffic congestion.

The concept of seamless metro-to-flight check-in services, similar to those offered in major cities like Paris and London, involves the transfer of passengers' luggage from the metro train directly to the aircraft. This integration aims to enhance convenience and efficiency for travelers, making their journey smoother and more hassle-free.
