Manitou: Offers backhoe loader, Telehandler, Electric Forklift Truck
Manitou Group, Hafeez Khan - Managing Director, South Asia
Our 3-year hydrogen research plan initiated in 2021 led to the introduction of our first fuel cell telehandler prototype powered by green hydrogen in 2022. We are now set to unveil a second prototype featuring a rotating telehandler by the end of 2023, and test these two prototypes in real conditions.
Manitou Group manufactures electric forklift trucks and industrial aerial platforms. In 2019 it introduced the first 20m all-terrain electric aerial work platform, marking a significant leap in sustainability. The subsequent launch of the OXYGEN label underscored the company’s dedication to low-emission models. At the Bauma Construction show in Germany in the year 2022, the Group unveiled 7 new electric models, including all-terrain aerial work platforms and telehandlers, and also announced that its new boom lift ranges would be 100% electric.
Steps to mitigate direct emissions from operations
Manitou Group has set two major objectives as part of its low-carbon commitment. First, it aims to reduce absolute greenhouse gas emissions on scope 1 and 2 by an impressive 46.2% by 2030, using the base year of 2019 as a reference. This demonstrates a tangible effort to mitigate direct emissions from its operations. Additionally, the company is targeting a 33.7% reduction in scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions per hour of machine use, recognizing that scope 3 accounts for a substantial 89% of its emissions. A pivotal aspect of Manitou Group’s strategy involves making strides in machine sales with low emissions. The Group has announced that 43% of machines sold by 2030 will be powered by electric or other alternative green energies.Embracing alternative fuels to reduce emissions
Our focus on hydrogen is a strategic move to complement our existing electric range by offering customers a low-emission solution that meets their specific needs while guaranteeing performance. In fact, our 3-year hydrogen research plan initiated in 2021 led to the introduction of our first fuel cell telehandler prototype powered by green hydrogen in December 2022.We are now set to unveil a second prototype, featuring a rotating telehandler, by the end of 2023. The year of launch of our first telehandler will depend on the development of the necessary infrastructure, in terms of storage & supply among others.
We are also collaborating with transport partners for spare parts and machines to reduce carbon emissions from road transport.
At Manitou Group, our approach encompasses manufacturing practices, collaborative projects, and user-friendly platforms that collectively contribute to a greener and more sustainable future.
Commitment to safety through integration of data-driven solutions
Manitou Group is focused on improving working conditions, enhancing safety, and boosting performance, and ensuring the well-being of those who interact with the company’s products and services. We have introduced safety packs for our telehandlers and Mobile Elevated Work Platforms (MEWP), as well as lighting packs for our MEWP produced in France. These packs serve rental companies during machine transport and on job sites, offering crucial insights to anticipate and prevent injuries or accidents. We analyze and use the data collected from our connected machines to increase the efficiency of daily operations for our users and provide a safer and more productive work environment. All our machines are equipped with its “digital twin” accessible through applications like MyManitou. The integration of QR codes on our machines enables operators to access safety-related videos that cover topics like machine startup procedures, cabin safety rules, maintenance guidelines, etc.
Retrofitting used machines
Our REMAN range of spare parts is a testament to our commitment to circular economy principles. We aim to integrate 40% low carbon steel into our products by 2025, promoting eco-friendly practices in our manufacturing processes. In January 2023, we initiated a collaboration with esteemed European rental company Kiloutou to develop a retrofit kit for used thermal telehandlers, which will not only extend their lifecycle but also contribute to reducing the environmental footprint. Our website https://used.manitou.com/en/ is exclusively dedicated to European dealers for the sale of used machines.Outlook for construction sector
The outlook for the construction equipment (CE) industry in 2024 may be influenced by several factors, including the upcoming general elections and implementation of BS V emission norms. However, the strong commitment of the Government towards increased infrastructure spending will positively shape the demand for construction equipment and foster an environment of innovation and growth. It is expected that not only the existing projects will speed up, but also new projects will come up, especially for rural areas under PMGSY.The implementation of BS V emission norms reflects an industry-wide commitment to environmental sustainability. While the pricing of BS V machinery may curb spending by the customers, it is important to note that the demand of BS IV will increase in the first half of 2024.
However, it’s crucial to note that economic conditions, global events, and unforeseen circumstances can also play a significant role in shaping the industry’s outlook. Staying updated with the latest market analyses, policy announcements, and economic indicators will provide a more accurate understanding of the construction equipment sector’s trajectory in 2024.
