Bagdogra airport gets Rs 3,000-cr upgrade in Assam
The central government has allocated Rs 3,000 crore for the expansion of Bagdogra airport, and the upgrading work is set to begin soon, according to AAI sources. The construction of the airport's boundary wall is currently in full swing, accompanied by design modifications and other civil works, including landscaping. With its current capacity to handle over 8,000 passengers and approximately 60 daily flights, the airport is poised for growth.
Additionally, the Union government has approved the construction of a six-lane road along NH10, connecting Balason of Matigara to Sevoke army cantonment. This project, valued at Rs 1,000 crore, will establish a direct link between the northwest and northeast regions of Siliguri. Furthermore, the New Jalpaiguri station is also set to undergo a transformation with a budget of Rs 350 crore already sanctioned. The aim is to create an airport-like ambiance at the station, ensuring a seamless and comfortable experience for passengers.
To prioritize accessibility and inclusivity, the New Jalpaiguri station will be made Divyang-friendly, featuring 12 escalators and 10 lifts. The installation of strategically placed CCTV cameras throughout the premises will enhance security measures, ensuring passenger safety. Once completed, the station will become the country's first international terminal station, facilitating smooth cross-border connectivity.
