The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro) has submitted a DPR to the Pune Municipal Corporation for the construction of ₹4,940 crore Neo Metro project. Pune's Neo Metro will cover a 43.84 kms on an elevated platform with 45 stations. The project is likely to start next year and will be completed by 2028-29.

According to Maha Metro MD Brijesh Dixit, the civic body had approached them for converting the upcoming High-Capacity Mass Transit Route (HCMTR) into a Metro Neo project. The proposed stations for the Neo Metro in Pune are Ambedkar Chowk, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Senapati Bapat Road, Kelewadi, Paudphata and Alankar Police Thane, among others.

Neo Metro is a mass rapid transit system providing low-cost, energy-efficient and eco-friendly urban transport solutions for tier 2 and tier 3 cities. It has three to five times more carrying capacity than public buses and will run on electricity at a speed of 90 km per hour.

Similarly, Neo Metro plan for Nashik is also on card as the 32-km long Nashik neo metro project has already got an in-principle nod from the Union government. If implemented as per plans, it will be the first-of-its-kind project to come up in the country. The Nashik metro project is expected to cost around ₹2,100 crore investment.
