Kathmandu-UP rail line on the anvil

Southern Railway
The government is actively contemplating expediting the proposed Barhni-Kathmandu railway project and is awaiting Nepal's concurrence for the inter-governmental agreement to start construction. Minister of state for railways Suresh Angadi informed that the external affairs ministry is following up with its Nepal counterparts to expedite the process. The survey for the five km stretch of the line within Indian territory has been completed. The survey for a new broad gauge line starting from Barhni in Uttar Pradesh to Kathmandu was sanctioned in 2015-16, for which work can be started only after the inter- governmental MoU has been signed.
