Jindal Stainless Supplies Steel for India’s First Underwater Metro Line
Jindal Stainless, India’s largest stainless-steel manufacturer, provided stainless steel for India's inaugural underwater metro line in Kolkata. The project, valued at INR ₹4,965 crore and inaugurated by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, features a 4.8-kilometer stretch beneath the river Hooghly, connecting Esplanade to Howrah Maidan. The underwater segment is part of the East-West Metro corridor, linking Howrah Maiden to Salt Lake Sector V, a prominent IT hub in West Bengal. Jindal Stainless supplied SS 301LN, a premium austenitic grade known for its corrosion resistance and durability, ensuring low maintenance costs over its lifecycle.
Abhyuday Jindal, Managing Director of Jindal Stainless, commended the project as a testament to India's infrastructure prowess, emphasizing stainless steel's transformative role in urban development. The underwater tunnel, reaching a depth of 32 meters below the water level, underscores the material's reliability in critical infrastructure. Jindal Stainless has supplied similar materials for other significant projects, including India's first Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) in Meerut, showcasing its commitment to cutting-edge urban transportation solutions.
