With the Asean region seeing large scale construction activities, equipment companies from across the world flocked to Intermat Asean to build brand visibility and get a strong foothold in the region’s growing construction sector. -P.P. Basistha reports

Asean intermat

Jointly organized by Impact Exhibition Management (IMPACT) and Comexposium Group, the Intermat Asean and Concrete Asia tradeshows, held in Bangkok during 6-9 Sept 2018, saw participation of close to 9,000 visitors from over 90 countries, mainly Asia, with over 500 companies exhibiting their products.

Products displayed included equipment for earthmoving and demolition, building roads, minerals processing and foundation, lifting, handling and transportation, components and spare parts. Major participants included global brands like JCB, Manitou, XCMG, Doosan, Liebherr Tower Cranes, Kato, Putzmeister, John Deere, IHI and World Tractor. While the Thai, Chinese, and European companies had a sizeable participation in the event, the Indian companies present included Apollo Infratech, KL Conequip Pvt Ltd etc.

According to Global Data from 2018-2022, the Asean region’s combined construction output will grow by 6.1 percent a year in real terms.

Speaking to NBM&CW during the event, Salil Choudhary, Business Manager- International, Apollo Infratech Group, said, “We are promoting our concrete batching solutions, block making machines and pavers. Slipform pavers and block making machines are high on the radar as there is not much competition in this business here. We will be banking on our products to develop the rated output and on our ability to deliver the necessary product support. We are looking for dealers and we will provide them the requisite training.”

Gujarat-based KL Conequip Pvt Ltd, was showcasing its brand of products. Said Bipin Chaudhary, GM, “We are here to get a flair of the Asian market, which is robust but highly competitive with many big players. We are promoting our twin shaft batch mix plants which give higher productivity and minimal wear and tear.”

William Fischer, Product Sales Manager, JCB, South-East Asia, commented, “There is a growing demand for our backhoe and skid steer loaders in the Asian Market. Our Livelink tools for machine monitoring and the machines’ versatility are major selling features.”

Steven Goh, Area Sales Manager, Manitou Group, said, “Despite premium quality access work platforms and telehandlers, we are seeing competition from the cheaper Chinese brands.”

A major crane dealer promoting Tadano cranes, said, “While Tadano cranes are seeing rising demand, there is stiff competition coming from Sany and XCMG.”

Though the participating companies were building their brand presence at Intermat Asean in a bid to get a strong foothold in the Asean markets, which held a lot of scope for business, they felt that the local taxation could add to their product cost and be a deterrent.
