CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2014 Sets New Records of Attendees, Exhibits, & Education

CONEXPO-CON 2014

The triennial international construction shows CONEXPO-CON/AGG and IFPE 2014 occupied center stage in Las Vegas in March this year with tremendous energy and serious buyers. The show delivered a global showcase of the newest product innovations and technologies for the construction, construction materials, fluid power, power transmission and motion control industries with more than 1,000 new products and services on display.

CONEXPO-CON/AGG attracts persons involved in all segments of the construction, aggregates and ready mixed concrete industries, including contractors, materials producers, government and institutional sector officials. Beside showcasing the latest technologies and innovations in equipment, products and services for the construction industries the show also offers a comprehensive education program during the five-day exposition, with seminars emphasizing industry issues and trends, management and applied technology.

Total registration of 129,364 soared as compared to the last edition of the shows as they achieved the second-highest attendance in their history. The shows set new records for exhibit space, number of exhibitors and education tickets sold. CONEXPO-CON/AGG with over 2.35 million net square feet of exhibit space and more than 2,000 exhibitors, and IFPE with more than 161,000 net square feet and 400 exhibitors. A record 41,000 education ticket sales were sold to the shows' education programs, underscoring their relevance to helping attendees succeed in today's business environment.

International Construction Show

This year's education program covered 120 sessions over 10 targeted tracks. The show featured a new Demolition & Recycling exhibit pavilion from the Construction & Demolition Recycling Association (CDRA) and the Technology & Construction Solutions pavilion from the Associated General Contractors of America. Reinforcing the global scope of the shows were eight international exhibit pavilions: CONEXPO-CON/AGG with China, Ireland, Korea, Spain and United Kingdom, and IFPE with China, Italy and Taiwan.

Attendees took advantage of the shows' strong industry education programs and the unparalleled opportunity to connect with industry peers, take the pulse of what's happening and learn what the future holds.

"The enthusiasm and traffic on the show floor was just incredible. Exhibitors cited the high quality of attendees; they told us these were serious buyers and reported robust sales to existing as well as new customers that exceeded their expectations," states Megan Tanel, CONEXPO-CONAGG show director.

The co-located CONEXPO-CON/AGG & IFPE 2014 maintained the growing international scope of the shows with international registrations totaling more than 31,000, or an increase of nine percent from the most recent events. The number of countries represented increased to 170 from 159 in 2011, and the number of international attendees matched the record 24% of total attendance set in 2011. International attendance drew heavily from Latin America, China, Canada, and Europe. More than 75% of show visitors were in managerial roles (36% of these with the top titles of president/owner and vice president/general manager/chief financial officer).

"CONEXPO-CON/AGG and IFPE 2014 reflected the feeling of momentum building in the industry. We are industry-run shows with industry needs put first; these show numbers are a testament to the value attendees, exhibitors, and other stakeholders derive from their participation," stated Melissa Magestro, IFPE show director.

The shows were chosen for the prestigious U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) International Buyer Program, which helps facilitate global attendance. More than 50 official international attendee delegations were organized by DOC as well as show industry partners. More than 95 allied associations and groups were official supporting organizations, coming from the U.S., Canada and 16 other countries worldwide.

Several national industry associations held their annual conventions or high-level board meetings at the shows; they joined hundreds of other industry and company meetings, from large events to smaller committees and other groups, all taking advantage of the shows to meet and share knowledge and learn from one another.

Industry recognition, networking events and programs also amplified the show experience: Innovation Awards program (from Diesel Progress magazine and global powertrain specialist ZF Friedrichshafen); Young Leaders event (from Construction Equipment magazine); Quality of Life industry recognition campaign (from Dexter + Chaney) etc.

Manitowoc introduces New Crawler Cranes with Breakthrough Variable Position Counterweight (VPC)

Manitowoc Ground Breaking Crawler Crane
New from Manitowoc are two ground-breaking crawler cranes, both made their debut at CONEXPO 2014 in Las Vegas, USA. The 300t (330 USt) MLC300 and the 650t (716 USt) MLC650 are loaded with an array of innovative features, most notably their unique Variable Position Counterweight (VPC).

The VPC system automatically positions the counterweight to fit the required lift. The counterweight moves along the rotating bed and is automatically positioned based on changes in boom angle. Advantages for customers include reduced ground preparation, lower ground-bearing pressure and less counterweight, without sacrificing capacity. Customers will not have to buy, transport or install as much counterweight compared with a traditional configuration. The counterweight boxes are also designed to be common across multiple crane platforms.

"The VPC is game-changing technology," said John Kennedy, SVP crawler cranes. "This new technology will have a significant impact on the lifting industry, as it enhances crane capacities, reduces mobilization time on the job site, and in the end, saves customers a significant amount of time and money."

The MLC300 features 96 m (315 ft) of boom and has the option of a fixed jib attachment of 30 m (98 ft). A 96 m (315 ft) luffing jib can be added to extend its reach to 144 m (473 ft). The MLC650 has a 104 m (341 ft) main boom to which a 30 m (98 ft) fixed jib can be added. A 101 m (331 ft) luffing jib can be added to reach a maximum 157 m (515 ft).

Both cranes are ideal for energy-related projects, including refineries, petrochemical installations, and power plants, as well as infrastructure applications. The smaller footprint plus the Variable Position Counterweight system enable the cranes to easily move around a job site, and a VPC-MAX capacity enhancing attachment allows increased capacity for heavy lifts that would usually require a wheeled-type lift enhancer.

The VPC-MAX attachment increases capacity and boom and jib combination lengths. The counterweight movement is based on the lifted load, boom length, boom and jib length, and load radius. The MLC300 can raise 120 m (394 ft) of boom with the VPC-MAX attachment and a boom and luffing jib combination of 168 m (551 ft). The MLC650 can raise 140 m (459 ft) of boom with the VPC-MAX attachment and a boom and luffing jib combination of 205 m (672 ft). The MLC650 maximum capacity increases to 700 t (770 USt) with the VPC-MAX installed.

Variable Position Counterweight

For the MLC300, the VPC-MAX attachment increases the max load moment when a 30 m (100 ft) fixed mast, a VPC-MAX counterweight beam and an additional 40,000 kg (88,185lb) of counterweight is added to the base crane. The ground preparation area needed for the MLC300 using the VPC-MAX can be only one-tenth of that required by competitive cranes.

For the MLC650, the VPC-MAX attachment increases the max load moment when a 36 m (118 ft) fixed-mast VPC-MAX counterweight beam and an additional 100,000 kg(220,460 lb) of counterweight is added to the base crane.

Because the counterweight attachment of the VPC-MAX on the MLC300 and the MLC650 never touches the ground, higher capacity lifts on barges that customers were never able to perform before are now possible. In addition, with its long reach and high capacity, the MLC650 can install 120 m (394 ft) and taller towers for the wind industry.

Both the MLC300 and MLC650 are designed to be easily transported anywhere in the world with their optimized component weights and dimensions. They have a removable live mast shipping module and their boom inserts are designed to allow luffing jib inserts to ship within them, which reduces shipping costs. In addition, both cranes use Manitowoc's patented FACT connection technology and are operated via Manitowoc's Crane Control System (CCS), a standard operating system across several crane models in different product ranges.

Additionally, the MLC300 comes with a crawler tensioning system, a dedicated hydraulically activated cylinder and hydraulic supply that allows independent track tension adjustment via crane setup remote and standard hydraulic connection.

"For both the MLC300 and the MLC650, we interviewed customers around the world," said Kennedy adding that "The result is two innovative cranes that are geared toward their needs. Customers will be able to lift heavier loads to higher reaches, reduce the time spent preparing the site for lifts, and ultimately, save money. The VPC's breakthrough technology will help customers become more dynamic and nimble on the job than once thought possible."

Liebherr Unveils it New LTM 1160-5.2 Five-axle Mobile Crane

Liebherr unveiled a new 160-tonne mobile crane on a five-axle chassis, the successor to the LTM 1160-5.1, at the Conexpo 2014. The load capacity of the new LTM 1160-5.2 has been increased by around 20-25% compared to its predecessor whilst the telescopic boom has remained at the same length of 62 m. The vehicle width has been reduced from 3 m to 2.75 m which means that it is not only easier to drive on public roads but also considerably better on constricted sites. The superstructure of the new LTM 1160-5.2 is powered by the engine in the crane chassis using a mechanical shaft. This makes the new 5-axle vehicle the second crane model to feature the innovative single-engine drive concept which Liebherr first presented at the Bauma 2013 for the LTM 1300-6.2.

Powerful boom system
The six-part 62 m long telescopic boom on the new LTM 1160-5.2 is telescoping in and out easily via the tried and tested rapid action TELEMATIK telescoping system. With its 10.8 m to 19 m folding jib and additional telescopic boom extensions, the new 160-tonner can achieve hoist heights of up to 93 m and outreaches of up to 76 m. The folding jib can be erected to an angle of 0°, 20° or 40°. An optional hydraulic adjustment facility for the folding jib is available, enabling it to luff under full load between 0° and 40°. For work in two hook operation, a second hoist gear and a 2.9 massembly jib and a rooster sheave is available.

The maximum ballast of the new LTM 1160-5.2 is 54 t with a width of 4.27 m. The base plate with 10 t and a 4 t ballast plate have the same width as the vehicle.

With a total weight of 60 tand a 12 taxle load, the new crane can carry its double folding jib, a 3-sheave hook block and a storage box with a generous payload.

Libherr Five Axle Mobile Crane

Ease of control with Load Sensing and LICCON2
In the hydraulic system, the electric "Load-Sensing" control ensures accurate work operations. Up to four movements can be actuated simultaneously. Depending on the requirements for the lifting task and of the crane driver, the slewing gear can be easily switched from "open" to "hydraulicallylocked".

The Liebherr LICCON2 crane control is used in the LTM 1160-5.2. Thanks to its modern and future-oriented control architecture, it facilitates adaptation to the continually growing needs of the market. A mobile, multifunctional control and display unit – BTT Bluetooth Terminal –is provided for setup functions. This means that the crane can be supported easily and safely. The crane driver also has the option of attaching and removing the hook block on the crane bumper with visual contact via remote control of the hoist winch and the luffing cylinder of the telescopic boom.

The Liebherr LICCON2 mobile crane control also offers the option of simple and thus cost-effective extension into a complete remote control system for the crane. Other than the relevant software on the crane, all that is required is a console with two master switches, which the existing BTT plugs into. A significant advantage for the crane operator is that the console can also be used for other cranes with LICCON2 controls programmed for remote control operation.

Innovative single-engine concept
The LTM 1160-5.2 features the new Liebherr concept for powering the superstructure. Instead of the twin-engine concept normally used on cranes in this class the 160-tonner is powered by a single engine with a mechanical shaft. Gear shafts are routed from the distributor gear in the crane chassis via two mitre gears through the centre of the slewing ring to the pump distributor gear in the superstructure.

A mechanical shaft ensures a particularly high efficiency level and low engine speeds in the chassis engine provide sufficient power for crane work. This ensures the economy of the new concept in terms of fuel consumption. The benefits of omitting a separate superstructure engine include a reduction in the amount of maintenance work and a reduction in weight. The omitted weight can be used for load-bearing components, thus increasing the crane's load capacity.

An add-on program has been developed for the new crane drive concept with just one engine and a mechanical shaft to allow the machine to be run with low fuel consumption. This enables the complete pump drive to be disconnected automatically when the engine is idling and then reconnected by the intelligent controller in a matter of seconds when it is required.

Time-tested, powerful drive train
A six-cylinder Liebherr diesel engine which develops 400kW / 544h.p. at 1900 rpm and torque of 2,516 Nm at 1350 rpm provides the LTM 1160-5.2 with all the power it needs. The engine complies with the emission regulations of Directive 97/68/EC - Stage 4 and Regulation EPA/CARB – Tier 4 final in the USA.

The force is transferred to the crane axles via the 12-speed ZF-AS Tronic gears. The intarder, a zero wear hydrodynamic brake integrated in the gearbox, acts as a retarder. In addition a Telma eddy current brake is available as an option. Like almost all LTM mobile crane models today, the LTM 1160-5.2 features pneumatic disc brakes. The rear axles of the new 160-tonner have active electro-hydraulic steering depending on the vehicle speed. This increases the manoeuvrability of the vehicle and drastically reduces tyre wear. Five steering programmes can be selected conveniently at the touch of a button.

Linden Comansa LC 2100 Series Attract Global Attention

Before CONEXPO CON/AGG the climate was positive and signs of recovery in North America were glimpsed. During the show, the team of Linden Comansa and its subsidiary in the United States, Linden Comansa America, experienced the reality of an optimistic market which is clearly back.

Linden Comansa Tower Crane
Linden Comansa America's booth received the visit of the top construction companies in the United States and Canada, as well as many rental companies of tower cranes and lifting equipment. The interest of the visitors focused on the large cranes from the LC2100 Series, such as the 21LC750 and the 21LC660, whose turntable was exposed in Las Vegas. Both models feature versions with up to 48 tonnes of maximum load and are designed to deliver high performances at any type of public work.

"We experienced over twice the activity of the last show," says Bill Carbeau, Vice President of Business Development for Linden Comansa America. "The visitors had high interest and were ready to talk about purchases or equipment purchase plans. Over 60% were qualified candidates with over half of those requesting information and quotations."

"Our theme was to generate awareness and educate the potential owner of the benefits of the Linden Comansa product range. About 25% of inquiries were related to the luffing-jib crane family, while about 75% related to various sizes of the highly acclaimed flat top tower cranes. Although no orders were written at the show, we received requests for quotes totaling over 30 tower cranes. We are confident that it will not comply with the phrase "what happens in Las Vegas stays in Las Vegas" and that the show will be a precursor to a great year for sales."

According to Martín Echevarría, Linden Comansa's Sales Director, the ConExpo fair has been much better than expected: "We knew that the North American market was improving, but we were pleasantly surprised with the atmosphere so optimistic and the number of new projects that are coming out. We have been very busy during the entire fair, preparing offers and making new contacts which we hope will be fruitful in the upcoming weeks."

The Las Vegas Convention Center has also served to bring together many dealers of Linden Comansa, who came mainly from the Americas, Europe and the Middle East: Canada, Colombia, Chile, Brazil, Germany, Sweden, United Arab Emirates, etc. Along with them were also present at ConExpo many final customers and rental companies that use Linden Comansa cranes in their projects.

CASE Showcases New Innovative Products

CASE Construction Equipment introduced the new CX350D Hydraulic Excavator, Case 821F and 921F Wheel Loaders and Five models of The M Series dozers; all equipment meeting the new Tier 4 Final regulations for emissions control and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology.

The CX350D offers significant advances in power, fuel savings, operation and control featuring an innovative combination of cooled exhaust gas recirculation (CEGR), selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) technologies, which helps maximize uptime and performance.

Case Hydraulic Excavator
The CASE CX350D is rated at 268 horsepower and provides maximum torque of 1048 NMWeighing in at 37376 Kg, the machine features an arm digging force of 16774 Kg and a bucket digging force of.23424 Kg. The "Auto Power Up" function increases each of those to 18234 Kg25474 Kg, respectively.

CASE Construction Equipment has equipped each model of 821 F and 921 F Wheel Loader with a selective catalytic reduction (SCR)-only solution that treats emissions separately with Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) and does not require the engine to re-circulate exhaust gas. This optimizes combustion and machine performance, lowers engine temperatures, and eliminates maintenance and downtime associated with filter replacement and regeneration. It also helps lower fuel consumption.

"CASE was the first to implement SCR into our Tier 4 Interim machines because that solution makes the most sense for wheel loaders based on the inconsistent engine loads placed on the machine through its regular work cycle," says Philippe Bisson, brand marketing manager, CASE Construction Equipment.

Each new Tier 4 Final wheel loader delivers best-in-class horsepower with a 6.7-liter Tier 4 Final-certified engine that also provides quick throttle response and impressive torque. The 821F and 921F wheel loaders produce 212 and 241 net peak horsepower (158 and 180 kW), respectively.

To provide operator comfort and help boost productivity, the 821F and 921F wheel loaders feature a cab with full climate control, as well as an award-winning joystick steering option, and equipped with two-level hydraulic control system.

The M Series Dozers displayed at CONEXPO included five models ranging from 92 to 214 net horsepower. It uses highly-efficient hydrostatic transmissions to deliver a class-leading drawbar pull. The new M–series Dozer is powered by a fuel efficient FPT Industrial engine which allows fuel savings up to 14%. This is the first time that selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology is built into a Case dozer.

The new CASE M–Series Dozer was fully launched in the North American markets by March 2014. In other regions where the company operates, models will be introduced with different timing and in line with different market's emission requirements. Case Construction Equipment is now all set to introduce the new product range with Tier 4 norms in India once it is implemented.

Caterpillar Highlights Integrated Technologies and Fuel Efficiency Advancements

Caterpillar Inc. highlighted the latest technology solutions and fuel efficiency for its U.S. EPA Tier 4 Interim and Tier 4 Final construction equipment at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2014.

Cat Connect was the primary focus of the North Hall exhibit, combining Cat technology products and services in integrated and scalable forms. Regardless of the size and complexity of the operation or the number or make of machines utilized, Cat Connect provides customers with the flexibility to select various technologies and services to meet job site requirements and achieve successful business results. By leveraging a broad suite of technologies, Cat Connect can integrate products, processes and people to not only help customers succeed on the job site, but also across mixed fleet operations of any size. According to Caterpillar Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Doug Oberhelman, "This year, we demonstrated how our Cat® Connect portfolio of integrated technologies can help our customers get the most out of their current machines and our newest construction products."

Caterpillar Fuel Efficiency
Moreover, more than a dozen new Cat machines made debut at the show including the new 336F Hydraulic Hybrid Excavator. This machine will replace the 336E H Hybrid to meet Tier 4 Final emissions standards and it's expected to deliver even greater fuel savings with no loss of power or productivity.

The new M–Series wheel loader line was also showcased, represented by the 972M XE. The machine features the XE advanced powertrain, with technology resulting in 25% lower fuel consumption on average when compared to machines with traditional torque converters—another example of how improved fuel efficiency leads to a more sustainable option for customers.

New to the Caterpillar features at CONEXPO-CON/AGG, Caterpillar Product Support displayed a broad selection of new and remanufactured components, parts and services. In the Gold Lot exhibit, Caterpillar displayed 15 machines, including a new motor grader and scraper, which incorporate innovative technologies to aid operator performance and promote productivity.

"We continuously hear from customers who use our products and in addition to technology advancements to help improve operator performance and productivity, fuel efficiency is a key driver for improving their operations," said Caterpillar Group President Ed Rapp. "We've responded with Tier 4 Interim and Tier 4 Final machines that deliver significantly improved fuel efficiency, and our customers have noticed the difference. Not only does this help our customers succeed through reduced operating costs, it also results in fewer emissions for more sustainable operations—better quality, better emissions, better fuel economy. It really does show the power of systems integration and the power of Cat products and services."

Volvo Displays Innovative Range of Machines & Services

ConExpo 2014 sees the global unveiling of Volvo Construction Equipment's most innovative range of machines and service products. The company showcased more than 17 new products, putting a particular emphasis on its road building expertise and Tier 4 Final/ Stage IV engine technology.

Among its various displays include the all new generation of E-Series excavators, G-Series articulated haulers and H-Series wheel loaders. That's not all, in what constitutes a virtual renewal of its core product range, Volvo CE put particular emphasis on its reliable road building products and industry expertise, and also launched to an international audience updated models of backhoe loaders, motor graders, skid steer loaders and compact track loaders. At the core of the exhibition area, visitors experienced the new generation L250H, the industry's first two-pass wheel loader, which is versatile and offers a wide range of buckets and attachments.

Volvo Excavators Wheel Loaders
The L250H and all Volvo machines covered by the new emissions requirements now feature new engine technology that is compliant with the Tier 4 Final/ Stage IV legislation. Comprehensively tested in punishing conditions, the new engines have been validated in bench and multi-application field-testing to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) levels from Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB levels of 2.0g/kWh to just 0.4g/kWh — an 80% decrease. In addition, Volvo has applied selective catalytic reduction (SCR) – a proven technology that Volvo Trucks has used since 2005 – to help meet the new requirement. The Volvo solution incorporates an after treatment catalyzer that reduces NOx levels by injecting a urea and water-based reduction agent. When the reduction agent, known as Diesel Exhaust Fluid in the US and AdBlue in Europe, is heated by the exhaust it produces ammonia. This causes a chemical reaction in the catalyzer that converts NOx to nitrogen and CO2 – both of which are found naturally in the air.

In the General Purpose Production Equipment area, the new EC380E crawler excavator, L350F wheel loader, A40G FS articulated hauler and MC70C skid steer loader were displayed. In the Utility Zone, visitors have seen the new PL4809D pipelayer, EC250D crawler excavator, BL70B backhoe loader, ECR88D compact short swing radius excavator and MCT135C compact track loader. In the Road Construction area, the DD120B asphalt compactor, SD115 soil compactor, P7170 paver, G946C motor grader and MT2000 half-lane milling machine were showcased. The outdoor booth demonstrated BL60B backhoe loader, EC55C compact excavator and a wide range of attachments and illustrate the advantages of Volvo CE's remarketing scheme.

Visitors at the booth also learnt about CareTrack®, Volvo's telematics system, and see a refurbished L220E wheel loader. Experts were on hand to discuss Certified New Life, a program that renovates machines to almost good-as-when-new condition – usefully extending their working life and many more things.

Showcasing the strength and complementary nature of the Volvo Group's product offering with the construction industry, Volvo CE sister companies Volvo Truck, Volvo Penta and Mack were also present at the show.
