Valvoline Infra Forum Firms up Future Plans

Valvoline Cummins Ltd (VCL), a joint venture between Valvoline Inc USA and Valvoline Cummins, is one of the India’s leading lubricant marketers and producers of quality branded lubes. Recently in Hyderabad, VCL has conducted an extensive interactive meet with players across construction and mining segments and dwelled in details on various international technological advancements that are taking place in equipment industry. The top brass of the company including Chief Executive Officer, Sandeep Kalia, Chief Technical Officer, S.K Mukherjee and C&I Head, Vikas Kapur, attended the event and explained how Valvoline is making value additions in its product line matching newer equipment requirements by offering multifarious variety of lubricants with equally strong service support to its customers engaged in the construction, mining and allied sectors.

Addressing the audience, CEO Sandeep Kalia, shed light on the of Valvoline-Cummins partnership and explained that Valvoline, the giant lubricant maker is owned by US based Ashland Corporation, a special chemicals manufacturing firm with presence in more than 140 countries and commanding  revenue worth $8 billion. In India, the company is represented under 50:50 joint venture with engine producing company Cummins and as per the arrangement worked out by the two players, Valvoline’s lubricants products are co-branded by Cummins.

Speaking about the product range and business structure, he informed that in India, the company is offering wide range of products including engine oils, hydraulic oils, greases, rock drill oils and compressor oils. VCL has 300+ employees catering to the retail customers through 400+ channel partners having 35,000 resellers. That apart, the institutional buyers are served through 34 Cummins dealers as well as through VCL, whereas the OEM business is served directly by the company itself which has 40 warehouses countrywide integrated through SAP.

He revealed that Valvoline, which is currently focusing on construction and mining segment aggressively has, decided  to launch new products and services specifically for the segments and has set an ambitious target for itself to become No.1 multinational lubricant brand in the segment in next 3 years. VCL achieved revenue of over Rs.1000 crore in 2012.

Explaining Valvoline Cummins capabilities, AVP C&I, Vikas Kapur, said that for offering impressive service network for tough working requirements of infrastructure companies this forum will definitely strengthen customers support matching customers’ requirements in India. In fact, higher equipment uptime is the need of the hour in India. Moreover, growing job volumes and diversified site working conditions makes it imperative to upgrade and expand our customers’ support system.

While mentioning about the on-field trials and tests as part of customers support, the Chief Technology Officer, Valvoline Cummins Limited, S K Mukherjee said that on-field tests and trials hold significance in India as because the equipment both at construction and mining sites work in severe hot, humid, dusty and inhospitable conditions and most of the sites are stationed at remote locations necessitating sustained site maintenance and support to the equipment in the absence of which frequent breakdown can become routine matter in the machinery making the contractor liable for penalties, he insisted.

Dwelling in detail on the advanced quality of lubricants, he said adding that our EHVI series of hydraulic oil, for excavators and other heavy earthmoving equipment are designed to withstand periodic changes in temperature and also for varying loads and pressure. The oils have high viscosity index blended with high VI base oils and shear stable VI improvers blended with superior thermal stability and anti-oxidation properties to avoid sludge formulation and to avoid filter blockages. Apart from this, the EHVI series of oils have advanced air and water separation characteristics, which enable its usage for longer periods reducing downtime and maintenance costs. Besides, it has introduced synthetic range of products along with problem solving products for grease and coolant applications. Valvoline has been supplying lubricants to OEMs in India comprising, Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata, AMW Trucks, International Tractors Limited, Elgi, John Deere. VCL mostly uses group-2 base oils for blending, which provides better cold flow and pumpability properties to the lubricants and most of its products are registered with API.

Presenting his view points at the forum, Head Services and Training, Cummins India, Ramesh Babu, elaborated on its product line offerings and future engine manufacturing plans. While Head Power Systems – Cummins India Ltd, Umesh Kalyani, gave a detailed view on its power systems business in India and Milind Phadke, Director Energy, Kline India dwelled on lubricant industry trends.

Valvoline invited top management of infrastructure majors in an open and constructive dialogue about lubricants in construction and mining industry. Apart from about 60 senior representatives of Valvoline and Cummins customers, members from BGR Mining and Infra, Somdutt Builders, IVRCL Ltd. ILFS Engineering and Construction, SEW, Sushee Infra, GKC Projects, NCC, KMC Construction, ECI Engineering, DOZCO, among others, have also participated in the interactive meet. The customers on their parts appreciated the extended sales services they have now with Valvoline lubricants, which have virtually minimized equipment downtimes.
