Truck Cranes: Manufacturers improvise and expand range

    ACE Truck Cranes
The market for truck cranes is widening due to varied application requirements across industries and sectors. Manufactures are responding with better products, marketing maturity, and adequate service and support to the end-users. P. P. Basistha reports.

The government’s new regulations have restricted deployment of second-hand truck cranes, making import difficult. It has also become mandatory for truck crane makers to build or customize their products to meet customer and regulatory quality standards, including homologation for the Indian market. Manufacturers, both Indian and foreign, are now making their truck cranes more roadworthy by meeting all the defined standards.

Buoyed by demand for indigenously made products, the industry is seeing fresh offtake of truck cranes, especially due to increase in construction of infrastructure and industrial projects across the country. Sizeable demand is coming from road, metro, and hydrocarbon projects. However, the once lucrative wind power sector is seeing less demand, as falling tariffs in the power sector has slowed down construction of wind power projects. But equipment manufacturers believe that this sector is bound to bounce back, given the government’s ambitious program to enhance wind power capacity in the coming years.

Sorab Agarwal, Executive Director, Action Construction Equipment Ltd. (ACE)
Mr. Sorab Agarwal, Executive Director, Action Construction Equipment Ltd. (ACE), informs that his company has been seeing good demand for Truck Cranes of 25-40 tons this year, with about 70-80% demand coming from general infrastructure construction and road projects. The cranes are being deployed for erection of precast sections at sites and for transportation of utilities. Buyers are mainly the corporate end-users and some rental agencies as well.

He adds, “We are promoting our 25, 30 and 40 Tons Truck Cranes which have the chassis of Ashok Leyland. We will be widening our product portfolio with the manufacturing of our new TM 250 – 25 Tons, TM300 – 30 Tons and TM 400 – 40 Tons Cranes on our dedicated chassis at our Faridabad facility. The new truck cranes will have better stability and mobility as we will ensure better center of gravity. Besides general infrastructure projects, they can be suitably deployed in steel and refinery projects. In view of the forecasted demand, we are now gearing up production.”

ACE will be rolling out heavier 50-75 tons truck cranes in 2018. These will be deployed in projects where currently the 25, 30 and 40 Tons are used. The company will also develop truck mounted, lattice boom cranes for use in steel yards. Distribution and after-sales service of the company’s increasing product range will be supported by its 100 service stations across the country and distributors in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Kolkata.

Other equipment in ACE’s product portfolio are its AB series of Articulated Boom Cranes and SB series of Stiff Boom Cranes with lifting capacity of 6-20 ton/meter. “Being a totally Indian entity and with close support from our vendors and business associates, our servicing and components are very cost-competitive,” says Mr. Agarwal.

    Deepak Garg, CEO, Sany India
“Sany India will soon start assembly of 45 / 60 / 80 ton truck cranes at its Industrial Park in Pune. Presently, Higher capacity cranes are being imported and Sany has supplied about 250 units, in last 3 years. These cranes have a superior load chart, built in with 75% of the rated lifting capacity, and higher reliability and efficiency due to their advanced electronics,” says. Mr. Deepak Garg, CEO, Sany India.

He mentions further, “We will be targeting industries such as wind power and refinery for construction and maintenance, and also general infrastructure like Metros, Railways and Road Bridges. Localization of the machines will give us a cost advantage in the Indian market. We will also consider exporting them to SAARC countries. We are evaluating the cost matrix for localization, as the cost of certain components are higher in India.”

    Sany Crane

Sany India manufactures its SPC series of 25-30 ton and 40-ton truck mounted cranes that come with an option of AMW and Ashok Leyland chassis. The cranes are being used in on-shore oil extraction industries, infrastructure projects and in the steel yards.

“We have to continuously redeploy our service engineers as the cranes keep on migrating from one location to another. Besides our 4 regional offices, we have set up a dedicated depot cum office in Assam and we have dedicated service teams in Gujarat and Rajasthan for our large population of truck cranes working in these regions,” informs Mr. Garg.

    Support Vital

The widening of product offerings by truck cranes manufacturers for varied application requirements across the infrastructure shows the growing levels of product development and marketing maturity. However, since the products are being developed keeping close view of the applications, it will be vital on the part of the manufacturers to render adequate support to the new range of truck cranes.
