Roads & Bridges: Repairing, Waterproofing & Asset Management

Sr. Vice President, STP Ltd.

Waterproofing Technology is continuously progressing. In this context, several important concepts are illustrated which are of use to technology planners and forecasters. STP Ltd has one of the biggest R&D divisions in the field of construction chemicals and allied products in India. Its products have been in use even much before India got Independence and over the years, the company has received numerous awards and is recognized as the master in the field of waterproofing.

Structures are exposed to aggressive environments like carbonation, alkali silica reaction, moisture, etc., resulting in corrosion of reinforcement and deteriorating quality of concrete. Today, the experts from STP have advanced on durability, repair, and protection of structures, and have developed state-of-the-art materials and techniques. ShaliPlast LW++ is an Integral waterproofing-cum-corrosion inhibitor for Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC). This revolutionary liquid waterproofing compound protects concrete internally from water ingress as well as saves the re-bars of reinforced concrete and mortar against chloride induced corrosion. The unique bipolar compound migrates through concrete during curing process and puts a passive layer over re-bars to stop chloride corrosion.

ShaliSeal RSTC - revolutionizing Indian roads

ShaliSeal RSTC - revolutionizing Indian roads

In India, the condition of most of the roads is pathetic, especially during the monsoons. The reason is simple: water entering the roads is the main cause of damage. The life of the roads can be increased by providing proper side drains and a water-resistant top layer. Over the years, STP has developed ShaliSeal RSTC, which is a coal tar-based sealer and almost unaffected by water. This product has been applied on various roads of NHAI, PWD and other institutions, and given incredible results.

Bitumen has been used as a paving material since the 18th century. It deteriorates under the sun's ultraviolet rays and water, gets dissolved by petrochemicals, attacked by chemicals, deicing salts etc. Currently, bitumen-based fog sealers are used in India. Time has come when we need to use a water-resistant sealer on roads, such as ShaliSeal RSTC, which is an incredible product set to revolutionize Indian roads.

Salient features of ShaliSeal RSTC-

  • Top coat road slurry for enhancing road life by preventing water ingress
  • A refined coal tar-based emulsion, designed to protect asphalt pavement
  • Resists ultra violet radiation
  • Resists fuel impregnation
  • Reduces aging of asphalt
  • Hence reduces vehicle maintenance

Bridge Deck waterproofing with SuperThermoLay APP membrane

Bridges are one of the major life-lines for connecting people. They need to be protected a major silent enemy, that is, water. STP has been doing bridge deck waterproofing using SuperThermoLay APP membrane, which prevents ingress of water into bridge concrete, thus preventing harmful ingredients from damaging the concrete. This has been done successfully on a number of bridges across India. The process consists of application of Shalitex Primer followed by tourching of SuperThermoLay APP membrane 4mm thicker followed by overlay of bituminous wearing course, and finally application of ShaliSeal RSTC.
