In line with its global vision, Nippon Paint India is expanding its portfolio beyond the paint and coatings product range; it will now offer products and solutions under the broad categories: Dry mix, Repair and Maintenance, Construction Chemicals, and Waterproofing. The products will meet demand from three key market segments:
  • During construction: Concrete Admixtures & Membranes
  • Post Construction (New Buildings): Concrete repair, Water proofing, Hybrid sealants, and Adhesives
  • Repair & Maintenance: Protective Coating, Sealants, and Waterproofing.
While the liquid-based products will be manufactured in the company’s Chennai unit, the aerosol-based products will be supplied by acquired companies, and the volume/powder-based products will be manufactured by manufacturing partners. Through this expansion, Nippon Paint will make its products available across various segments and establish itself as a key player in the overall Construction Chemicals market as provider of products that protect buildings at every stage of construction, ensuring longevity of the structures. The technology behind these products is based on Nippon’s in-house research and also on the results of recent mergers and acquisitions that have taken place in this sector globally.

Nippon Paint India

“The increasing number of residential and commercial building constructions, innovations in architectural design and engineering, affordable homes, and growing urbanization are expected to drive this category, comments Mahesh Anand, President, Nippon Paint India (Decorative). “We are keen to expand into the Construction Chemical Solutions market, which is pegged at INR 12,500 cr, and we look forward to tapping the opportunities for the company’s further growth and expansion.”

“We plan to increase dealer touch points by 50% as there is a potential to expand the dealer network from paint dealers to tile fixers and hardware suppliers across tier 2 & 3 cities. We will also train people to become expert solution providers: painters will be trained in waterproofing; tile laying teams will be trained on adhesive solutions; and small-scale contractors, masons and allied teams will be trained in using concrete admixtures and chemicals,” he informs.

In 2021, the housing sales in India had increased by more than 51% compared to 2020. Though awareness is still very low in this huge market segment, research reports project a CAGR of over 10.4% in the next 3 years. This is expected to double the present per capita consumption.

The construction industry has started focusing more strongly on the Construction Chemicals segment; and is developing products that offer solutions from repair & maintenance to all stages of construction like pre-construction, during construction, and post-construction. “Nippon continues to remain a sustainable brand as our range of products in this segment do not require excessive use of water, encouraging speed of construction and low maintenance. In addition to this, our waterproofing solutions, sealants, and adhesives encourage quick fix home repairs without having to do any do-overs in repairs and maintenance,” says Anand.

Founded in Japan, Nippon Paint has over 141 years of experience and a presence in 31 countries including Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, China, India, Pakistan, UK, Germany, Greece, and Russia. It produces high-quality paints and coats for decorative, industrial, and automotive divisions, with an emphasis on innovation and eco-friendliness.
