Women in Logistics The Go-Getters

The Indian society at large is evolving; people’s outlook is broadening and so is the work culture. The logistics sector, though traditionally perceived as a male-dominated industry due to the labor-intensive jobs that are largely physical in nature, there is a perceptible shift in the mindset of people working in it. Like many other industries, the Logistics Industry too is modernizing, becoming more technologically advanced, and open to hiring women. Especially, the introduction of advanced technologies in goods management and other processes, and the use of automation and robotics, is reducing the entry barriers for women.

The Logistics Industry may still be lagging behind other industries in leveraging the skill sets that women can bring to the worktable, but a change is definitely happening. As gender discrimination diminishes and makes way for gender diversity, the possibilities for the professional growth of women working in the logistics sector will be immense. Logistics companies that believe in and promote gender diversity in their workforce can expect to achieve more growth. As competition increases, the focus is firmly on delivering as per customer expectations – the most important measure of success. The people driving this could easily be the women in the organization.

In this issue of Lifting & Specialized Transport, we bring to you eight women who are working in various capacities in areas such as Commercial Strategies, Business Development, Procurement, Human Resources, Finance and Global Supply Chain, in well-established logistics companies, where they hold leadership positions, and are steering their company towards achieving its goals.

Dr. Sharmila H. Amin, Chairperson & Member Board, Globe Forwarding Agencies; Sunila Yadav, Managing Director, Anil Mantra Logistix; Sanjam Sahi Gupta, Director, Sitara Shipping; Kruti Jobanputra, Director, JWC Logistics Park; Saloni Agrawal Chokhani, Head – International Operations, Nagarkot Forwarders; Snehal Khedkar, Principal Logistics Specialist at Fluor Daniel; Amandeep Kaur, Specialist in Commercial Strategies, Procurement and Global Supply Chain, Fluor Daniel; and Monica Katyal, Head – Human Resources, Synchronized, are ambitious young women who have proven that given the right opportunities and acknowledgement of their capabilities and skills, women employees can become highly successful in their assigned roles.

The following pages encapsulate their experiences and the challenges they faced in dealing with the biased perception that the industry holds of women employees in a male dominated work environment. But with grit, determination, and a passion for their job, these young women overcame the hurdles and are raring to move up the corporate ladder.

They are vocal about the initiatives that the government and the supply chain fraternity should take to bring more diversity in the workforce and formulate policies that would help women develop professionally (through training, education, guidance, workshops, and skill development programs), along with ensuring their safety and flexibility for work-life balance.
