Growth was driven by a 5% rise in Earthmoving Equipment sales, a 9% increase in Road Construction Equipment, and an 11% jump in Concrete Equipment. However, Material Handling Equipment and Material Processing Equipment saw declines of 3% and 4%, respectively. Despite the year-on-year growth, quarter-on- quarter sales dropped by 29%, from 40,965 units in Q4 FY 2023-24. Earthmoving Equipment, which constitutes 70% of total CE sales, fell by 31%, with other segments also registering declines. “The first quarter of the financial year is traditionally slower due to the normal seasonality that the industry experiences every year,” said Mr. V. Vivekanand, President, ICEMA and Managing Director, Caterpillar India Pvt. Ltd. “Additionally, this year, the General Elections in the country further slowed down the pace of projects in the first quarter due to the Election Code of Conduct being in force. However, with the continued focus on infrastructure spending, the industry is hopeful that demand momentum will resume after the monsoon,” he added. Of the total 28,902 units of Construction Equipment sold in Q1 FY25, 26,020 units were sold in the domestic market, while 2,882 units were exported. The Earthmoving Equipment segment sold 19,858 units, while sales of Material Handling Equipment stood at 3,760 units, Concrete Equipment at 3,199 units, Road Construction Equipment at 1,457 units, and Material Processing Equipment at 628 units for the first quarter of FY 2024-25. “Since the Indian CE industry has been on a record-breaking growth trajectory over the past two years, the slowdown in demand for construction equipment during Q1 of FY 2024-25 is less pronounced than what is usually experienced in an election year,” said Mr. Jaideep Shekhar, Convener, ICEMA Industry Analysis and Insights Panel, and VP & Managing Director, APAC & EMEAR, Terex India Private Limited. “In fact, sales in the first quarter of this year are 5% higher than those in the first quarter of last year, despite the impact of the General Elections,” he added. On a month-on-month basis, sales in June 2024, at 9,363 units, recorded a 2% decline compared to May 2024, but there was a 5% increase over the 8,889 units sold in June 2023. While two of the five key equipment segments – Earthmoving Equipment and Concrete Equipment – registered 9% and 13% growth, respectively, in monthly sales for June 2024, the other segments, namely, Material Handling Equipment, Road Construction Equipment, and Material Processing Equipment, saw reduced sales of 7%, 15%, and 5%, respectively, compared to June 2023. “Overall, the industry is optimistic about this year’s growth, as the CE industry in India has entered a phase of accelerated growth driven by the adoption of new technologies in response to emerging demand, increased localization of components, and policies aimed at attracting greater foreign investment,” said Mr. V. Vivekanand. Net Leasing of Grade A Office Space in India to Grow 10- 12% This Fiscal N et leasing of Grade A commercial office space in India is projected to increase by 10-12% this fiscal, reaching pre-pandemic levels of 41-43 million square feet. The growth is driven by strong demand from global capability centers (GCCs), banking, financial services, insurance (BFSI), and manufacturing sectors. This uptick in leasing activity is expected to stabilize vacancy rates, especially as underperforming special economic zones (SEZs) are denotified, boosting the cash flow and credit profiles of commercial real estate entities rated by CRISIL. A CRISIL Ratings analysis of office space owners, with over Rs 70,000 crore in debt and a total leasable area of approximately 150 million square feet across seven major cities, supports these findings. GCCs, which are projected to account for 40-45% of net leasing, are expanding due to competitive office rentals and the availability of skilled talent in cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, Pune, Hyderabad, and Gurugram. Gautam Shahi, Director at CRISIL Ratings, notes, "The Indian commercial office space industry is set for continued recovery this fiscal with high demand absorbing the elevated supply. Vacancy levels, which rose by 600 basis points during the pandemic, are expected to stabilize at around 17.4-17.5%." Sector-wise, IT/ITeS companies are expected to see modest growth, while demand from the engineering, manufacturing, and BFSI sectors will remain robust. Flexible workspace operators will also continue to gain traction due to their adaptable offerings. The recent amendment to the Special Economic Zones Act, 2005, which allows floor-wise denotification of IT/ITeS SEZs, is expected to further support the market by addressing low occupancy rates. Pranav Shandil, Associate Director at CRISIL Ratings, added, "The improving net leasing demand and SEZ Act amendment will benefit CRISIL's commercial real estate portfolio, with 35-40% of the vacant SEZ stock expected to be demarcated in the next two fiscals, leading to a 9-10% increase in cash accruals this fiscal." Powerscreen Tackles Extreme Conditions to Install Equipment in Ladakh A Powerscreen PT400X Jaw Crusher, 1000 Maxtrak Cone Crusher, and Chieftain 1700 Screen have been commissioned for a Border Roads Organisation (BRO) project near Demchok, close to the China border, at Umling La, Leh Ladakh, the world's highest motorable pass at 19,024 feet. The equipment will produce road construction materials like Granular Sub Base (GSB), Wet Mix Macadam (WMM), and various aggregates (5mm, 10mm, 20mm). The site’s high altitude presented significant challenges due to low oxygen levels and temperatures, which dropped to -23°C during the project. Additionally, the terrain was hilly with sharp bends and no feasible roads, complicating the transportation and installation of the equipment onsite. Powerscreen equipment is uniquely suited and reliable in extreme climatic conditions due to its robust engineering and advanced technology, reinforced by rigorous testing and quality materials to withstand harsh environments—including high-altitude conditions. Additionally, the innovative design of Powerscreen equipment allows for dismantling and reassembly, facilitating transportation and installation in rough, inaccessible terrains. To navigate the rough terrain, the service team expertly dismantled the Powerscreen equipment for transport and reassembled it on site. Despite the extreme conditions, the service team completed the installation and commissioning in 15 days. The Powerscreen PT400X Jaw Crusher has been set up as the primary crusher and takes large and variable sized feed material to be fed into the 1000 Maxtrak Cone Crusher, which uses Automax® crusher technology to provide high volumes of excellently shaped, consistent product. This material is then screened by the Chieftain 1700 Screen to separate the product into its various sizes. The successful deployment of Powerscreen equipment at Umling La has enabled the BRO to produce the necessary materials for their road project, ensuring the continuation of vital infrastructure development in the region. The infrastructure will improve access to remote villages, making it easier for residents to travel for medical care, education, and other essential services.
