Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has announced plans to develop the Eastern Grid with over 5000 kms of navigable waterways. Speaking at the second Inland Waterways Summit in New Delhi, the Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways stated that the government was working to develop the potential of the eastern region, which comprises four key waterways and certain international routes. The development of the Eastern Grid is expected to boost regional integration, accelerate development and deepen trade ties within BBIN countries as well as countries like Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. The minister also cited the success of the National Waterways 1, the river Ganga, as an encouraging example of the government's efforts in this area.
