In his address, Shri Nagendra Nath Sinha emphasized the importance of the workshop as part of ongoing dialogues between the Ministry of Steel, MoEFCC, and NITI Aayog to ensure the sector's sustainability. He highlighted challenges such as India's higher per ton crude steel emissions compared to the global average, attributing it to factors like the quality of available iron ore and limited scrap availability.
Shri Sinha discussed efforts by a task force involving the Ministry of Mines and MoEFCC to encourage beneficiation of low-grade iron ore. He also mentioned policies like Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) aiming to increase vehicle scrap availability. Despite these challenges, he stressed the industry's responsibility in reducing carbon emissions, noting that proactive steps are essential for sustainability.
Shri Sinha urged the steel industry to take the lead in emissions reduction efforts, emphasizing the industry's significant control over emissions within its processes. He called for collaborative action from all stakeholders to promote sustainability, highlighting the Ministry's commitment to support and guide these efforts.
