SC clears DMRC’s Phase-IV expansion
The Supreme Court has refused to halt the construction of the Delhi Metro's Phase-IV project, citing that any interference would result in a significant cost escalation. The expansion project aims to improve Metro connectivity to the extended areas of the National Capital Region through six corridors, namely, Aerocity to Tughlakabad, Inderlok to Indraprastha, Lajpat Nagar to Saket G Block, Mukundpur to Maujpur, Janakpuri West to R K Ashram, and Rithala to Bawana and Narela.
A petition filed in court had alleged that the expansion is being carried out on "deemed forest land" without the necessary forest clearance. However, the court cautioned Delhi Metro to exercise care while planning future phases. The Phase IV project, planned by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), aims to add 11 new interchange stations, further enhancing the Metro network.
In a move that supports the project, last month, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) approved an outlay of Rs 1,000 crore for Phase-IV, with Rs 350 crore budgeted for 2023-24. The Phase-IV project has a deadline of December 2024, but completion may take longer than the targeted timeline.
