MHUD approves Rs 7,942-cr elevated metro line in J&K
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has granted approval for the construction of elevated light metro rail systems in the twin cities of Jammu and Kashmir. This significant milestone sets the stage for the implementation of the multi-crore project in the current fiscal year. The capital cities, Srinagar and Jammu, are poised to undergo a transportation revolution with the introduction of the elevated light metro rail. The Union finance minister emphasized the potential of these projects to enhance mobility, alleviate traffic congestion, and contribute to sustainable urban development.
Following the approval from the Public Investment Board of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, the proposal will now proceed to the cabinet for final approval. The planned elevated metrolite systems in Srinagar and Jammu will cover distances of 25 km and 23 km, respectively. The estimated costs are Rs 4,352 crore for the Srinagar project and Rs 3,590 crore for the Jammu project. Construction is slated to commence in 2023-24 and be completed by December 2026. Upon completion, Srinagar and Jammu will become the first non-major cities in India to have a fully operational rapid transport network.
