HMR to launch Rs 6,250-cr Shamshabad airport metro line
Six years after its launch, the Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) is entering a new phase of construction with the extension from Raidurg to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Shamshabad. This 31-kilometer line will primarily be elevated, with a portion on the surface and underground, amounting to a total cost of Rs 6,250 crore. In December of the previous year, the state Chief Minister laid the foundation stone for this project.
What makes the Airport Metro Express unique among metro rail projects in India is that it will be fully funded by the state government under the engineering, procurement, and construction model. In the initial phase, the Central government contributed only 10% of the Viability Gap Funding, totaling Rs 1,458 crore. The metro project follows a public-private partnership (PPP) model, with a consortium led by the State Bank of India providing a loan of approximately Rs 11,000 crore.
