The 114-year-old Egmore Station, the second major terminal of the Southern Railway, is being redeveloped to accommodate increasing passenger volumes and to provide improved infrastructure and amenities for passengers. The redevelopment will take place on both sides of the station, at Gandhi Irwin (main entrance) and EVR Periyar Salai, and will aim to provide a modern, state-of-the-art structure while preserving the heritage value of the existing station. The redevelopment will include the construction of new station buildings on both sides of the station, arrival and departure concourses, a large lounge and food court at the departure terminal, a smaller lounge at the arrival terminal, and two multilevel parking complexes on either side of the station. There will also be two footbridges for passengers to move between platforms and sides of the station, and escalators and lifts on each platform to facilitate the movement of arriving and departing passengers.
