CMRL hastens work on Phase-2 elevated corridor

The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has hastened the construction work on the 118.9km long phase-2 Puzhuthivakkam-Sholinganallur elevated corridor connecting southern suburbs with the mainline city. The project is a part of the contract awarded to Hindustan Construction Company- KEC International joint venture late last year. The stretch, which is a part of corridor-5 of phase-2 from Madhavaram to Sholinganallur, has to be completed by 2026.

Piling work to lay foundation and build the pillar is currently in full swing. Nearly 436 pillars will be constructed for the elevated corridor and the contractors may be behind schedule by a few months, but they are going all out to make up for the elapsed period. The line will connect major southern suburban localities that are otherwise poorly linked through public transport and will have stations at Madipakkam, Kilkattalai, Echangadu, Kovilambakkam, Vellakal, Medavakkam Koot Road, Kamaraj Garden Street, Medavakkam Junction, Perumbakkam, Global Hospital and Elcot. For metro users in these localities, Sholinganallur will be the interchange station to reach the IT corridor on OMR. Nearly one lakh people travel from southern suburban localities including Tambaram and IT corridor and metro rail, when it opens, will have more patronage in this route as compared to CMBT or Guindy.
