National Highways Authority of India has initiated the process of preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Maduravoyal-Chennai Port elevated road corridor. The project was sanctioned in 2007 but remained in limbo to date. NHAI has now proposed to revise the corridor design and modify it to a double-deck flyover, which will be constructed at an investment of ₹5,000 crore. As per the new design, the upper deck will be used by commercial vehicles like trucks and the lower one by other passenger vehicles. The revised design will have ramps for entry and exit at 13 locations, including Chintadripet, Monteith Road, Binny Road, Spurtank Road, Aminjikarai police station, Kamaraj Salai, Sivananda Salai, College Road, and Arumbakkam. The earlier design had only six entry and exit points. Review work is underway to finalize the length of service roads to be constructed under the flyover.
Once constructed, this will be the first double-deck elevated corridor in the country and Port bound containers will be able to reach their destination within 30 minutes instead of three hours.
