BRO to build Rs 2,000-cr tunnel in Lipulekh Pass
The Border Road Organisation (BRO) is preparing to commence construction on a six-kilometer-long tunnel between Bundi and Garbiyang on the Ghatiabagar-Lipulekh road in Uttarakhand. The objective is to ensure smoother vehicular movement up to the last border post of the Lipulekh Pass, located on the India-China border. The project is estimated to cost Rs 2,000 crore. The contract for the tunnel's groundwork has been awarded to ATINOK India Consultants, and survey work is currently underway.
Hirak Vimal Goswami, Chief Engineer of Project Hirak, explained that BRO has designated the border road from Bundi to Garbiyang as a single lane in preparation for the proposed tunnel, while the remaining sections will have double lanes. The border road, commissioned in 2020, is currently undergoing black-topping and double-laning. The majority of the double-laning work has been completed, with only the formation-cutting work remaining on the five-kilometer stretch from the KMVN huts to the Lipulekh pass. Once approval is granted by the Central Command headquarters, this work can be completed within 100 days.
