BMC to build Rs 5,500-cr Mahim-Dahisar elevated corridor
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced plans to construct an elevated corridor from Mahim to Dahisar, with an investment of Rs 5,500 crore. This project will involve the construction of cable-stayed bridges over a stretch of 15.3 km, effectively increasing the highway's length to approximately 25 km. The elevated section will comprise three to four single-pier cable-stayed bridges, which will be linked to underpasses at various junctions. The implementation of this project requires the dismantling of several existing flyovers to make way for the cable-stayed bridges. This will not only create additional lanes underneath the bridges but also optimize the utilization of space. The tendering process will commence soon after the completion of a detailed project report and subsequent government approval. P Velrasu, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects), expects the project report to be prepared within the next few months. The construction of the elevated corridor will increase the number of lanes on both carriageways to 14 or 16, including lanes underneath the bridges. The inclusion of underpasses at key junctions such as Kala Nagar, JVLR, and Aarey aims to facilitate the seamless movement of vehicles from arterial roads onto the highway without hindering traffic flow on different lanes.
