BKC under-construction flyover collapses in Mumbai

An under-construction flyover collapsed in BKC, Mumbai. A girder span weighing over 250 metric tonnes tilted and collapsed while work was on at the flyover. The flyover is part of the Santacruz Chembur Link Road (SCLR) extension project. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is the nodal agency for the project, which has appointed J Kumar Infra Projects Limited as the contractor.

According to MMRDA, the incident took place around 4.40 am at the MTNL junction/arm in BKC when the deck concreting work of girder was being carried out. A 65-m long and 8.5-m wide span of the girder tilted at one side during the deck concreting work. Of the 24 workers, two engineers and two supervisors carrying out the work, 14 workers sustained injuries.

The first phase of the 5.4-km SCLR extension project is estimated to cost ₹645 crore. The work on the project began in October 2016 and is expected to be completed in March 2022. Till now, around 55-60 percent of the work has been completed.
