Afcons awarded Rs 6,397-cr contract for construction of undersea rail tunnel
The National High Speed Rail Corporation (NHSRCL), responsible for India's first bullet train project, has awarded a contract worth Rs 6,397 crore to Afcons Infrastructure for the construction of a 21-km-long tunnel. This tunnel will be a significant part of the project as it will be India's first undersea rail tunnel, spanning seven kilometers at Thane Creek in Maharashtra.
Afcons Infrastructure will employ three tunnel boring machines and the new Austrian tunnelling method for the construction of this twin-track tunnel. The technical bids for the project were opened in February 2023, followed by the opening of financial bids in April 2023.
The Ministry of Railways aims to operationalize the bullet train on a larger section by 2027, with a maximum speed of 320 kmph. The corridor, covering a total length of 508 km and comprising 12 stations between Mumbai and Sabarmati, will revolutionize high-speed rail travel in India.
