AAI starts work on Chennai airport

Airports Authority of India (AAI)
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is set to start iconstruction of a terminal building at the Chennai airport, said a senior AAI official, adding that the agency is resuming construction of integrated terminal, which was stalled after clamping of the national lockdown. The official guidelines say that work can be carried out if laborers are available in and around the work site and provided they are all in labor camps opposite the airport. He also said that social distancing norms will have to be followed while bringing workers into the work site and also during construction. In addition, most of the materials like cement and steel are lying in the stockyard, and equipment and allied vehicles are also at the work site. In fact, the shutdown is an advantage because the airport is not functioning as it was a challenge to carry out work with a functioning domestic and international terminal on either side of the worksite. Once all major work including construction of the terminal in the space between the international and domestic terminals, and a multi level car parking is over, the contractor will take up exterior and interior work on the building. The new terminal is expected to increase the passenger handling capacity of the airport to more than 30 million passengers per annum.
