MoRTH fast tracks $20-bn road building program

Ministry of Road Transport and Highways
In an aggressive move to match road infra deficit, the road transport ministry continues to develop its road network as per its ambitious plans and has already contracted road projects with a length of 6,320 km, said official sources, adding that this is for the first phase of the program and the work entailed a massive investment worth $20.95 billion. However the entire program of road development will cover some 84,000 km of roads and will be worth $109.1 billion. As a matter of fact, the program is prioritizing areas of India that have not been covered by previous road-building projects. The focus will be on improving roads in border areas with India's neighbors, as well as upgrading connectivity to rural areas that currently have minimal transport links. Included in the first phase of the project will be improvements to 2,000 km of roads along India's bordering areas as well as a further 2,000 km of roads connecting the country's coastal areas and ports across coastal states of the country.
