In a bid to build world class road network in the state, construction work on upgrading the 84-km stretch of national highway from Belagavi to Goa border crisscrossing Khanapur, Gunji and Ramnagar on NH-4 is all set to start at an investment of ₹1,342.98 crore. Since vehicles will be barred from using this stretch of the highway during construction period, the district administration is currently busy to work out detail about alternative routes to be provided once the work begins. Union minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari had laid the foundation stone for the project in March when the project was divided into two packages - one from Belagavi to Khanapur and Khanapur to Goa border upgrade. The last 14-km stretch of this highway passes through a forest and approval has been taken from the authorities concerned and mitigation measures are also been carried out on war footing. The project was necessitated because Khanapur, Gunji, Londa, Ramnagar, Tinaighat and Anmod route is very busy as it is being taken by most road users commuting between Goa and Belagavi and Goa and Dharwad
