The Amaravati Metro Rail Corporation (AMRC) is all set to start the construction of Light Metro Project (LMP) in Vijayawada city at an investment of about Rs.5,500 crore. Initially, a detailed project report (DPR) would be prepared by an expert foreign consultancy for the LMP with passenger capacity of 200 to 220 only against the Metro Project‘s passenger capacity of 250 to 300. Less number of passengers can be travelled in LMP as compared to standard metro project, which are built in bigger cities. Now, fresh DPRs will be prepared by an expert European company for the LMP in Vijayawada. The AMRC is redesigning the Metro Project with reduced cost and to full fill the transport needs of denizens of Vijayawada. Two corridors on Eluru Road and MG Road will be built as usual under LMP but with less expenditure. Tenders for allotment of works for preparation of DPR opened recently in Germany as a German-based company KWF funding for DPR preparation. As per the latest proposals, capital cost of per km is estimated between Rs.190 and Rs.210 crore against the previous estimations of Rs.250 to Rs.300 crore per km made for Metro in Vijayawada.
