The Central government has recently given go-ahead signal to the highway projects in Uttar Pradesh at an investment of Rs.9,600 crore. The project in question is the proposed six-lane expressway project for Bundelkhand starting from Tiruwa to Jhansi via Agra-Lucknow expressway. The project has been proposed to build six lanes till Jhansi and later on four lanes via Trikoot to Allahabad. Besides, a proposal to construct a ring road for all major cities in UP, including Allahabad, Lucknow, Gorakhpur, Bareilly, Kanpur, Moradabad, and Meerut, was also in the pipeline. In this connection, the state has submitted proposals for converting 109 roads into national highways, of which 10 have already been notified as national highways while in-principle approval has been given to 48. In all, 51 highway stretches are in the process of being declared as National Highways across the state.
