    MMRDA unveils bridge widening plan

Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA)
Ensuring smooth flow of road and rail traffic, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and Railways in a recent development have revised the plans for the Kopri bridge widening project and bring down the cost of the multi-crore project by nearly Rs 90 crore and also speed up its execution. The much-delayed project is expected to cut down the travel time between Thane and Mumbai. A joint meeting between engineers of the two agencies was held recently wherein it was decided to construct a new four-lane bridge towards south of the existing bridge. The widening was necessitated as traffic from either sides of the 10-lane Eastern Express Highway used to converge at the four-lane railway over bridge at Kopri causing bunching extending till Teen Heath Naka and Mhada bridge. The railways had initially demanded that the height of the bridges be increased as it was changing the power supply for the lines below to 25,000 volts.
