The state government in Maharashtra in a recent development has asked for Centre's assistance to the tune of Rs. 15,000 crore to finance the ongoing metro and mono rail projects in the city. In its entirety, there are eight metro projects and one mono rail project in the pipeline, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said in a recent statement, adding that the Centre has allotted Rs 20,000 crore for Pune and Nagpur metro projects and the state government wants a share for Mumbai as well. In the next five to six years, a metro rail network of 360-km will be ready for public and will serve at least one crore people every day. There is a need to promote public transport in the state and that out of the recently cleared funds, central assistance worth Rs 8,712 crore had been made available for the state, he added.
