Govt targets 51 lakh housing units

    Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana Gramin
The government has targeted the construction of 51 lakh houses in the current fiscal and this would meet its target of building one crore houses by 2019 under the revised Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana Gramin (PMAY-G) and hopes to bring down the building time to 6-12 months from 18 months to 3 years earlier. Over 32 lakh houses have been reported complete in FY17 and18 lakh in the last financial year. The budget this year allocated Rs. 15,000 crore for the scheme and nearly doubled allocation per house hold from Rs.75,000 to over Rs. 1,20,000 and over all area also increased from 22 to 25 square meters. The government is going all out to speed up construction significantly besides ensuring that the money being transferred is not put to any misuse, said official sources, elaborating that every house is to be geo-referenced along with time and date on photographs of the house at various stages of construction to ensure smoother and faster verification. In a recent exercise, government surveyed 3.92 crore houses among total deprived households as per Socio Economic and Caste Census data 2011 to find 2.26 crore households eligible for the scheme. The target is to build 3 crore houses for rural poor in the next 7 years.
