Govt. doubles 17 border roads as airstrips

Govt. doubles 17 border roads as airstrips
After decades of sheer neglect, the Indian government is building border roads, including 17 highways, to be used as airstrips in hours of crisis, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said, elaborating that the former government had sanctioned the construction of 73 strategic roads along the border, but the current regime is scaling them up with strictly adhering to timelines. People residing in border areas need highway network and better infrastructure and his ministry is working on the project in collaboration with the Ministry of Defence. The roads will double up as airstrips and traffic will be stopped when an airplane lands or takes off. The road and air connectivity will also provide better access to remote areas. Prior to this, a committee was constituted comprising officials of both ministries to come out with specifications of such highway stretches. The committee has looked into details like feasibility of the stretches and their length and breadth. Last year, he had spoken about the construction of such an airport in Rajasthan and similar projects are being planned in Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and some other border districts across the country, he claimed.
