The transport minister in a recent proposal to finance minister demanded hiked funding outlay in the upcoming Budget, to build the required road network in and around metropolitan cities, setting up of logistics parks along national highway corridors, linking ports and manufacturing hubs with top-class road infrastructure. In addition, the ministry is also pressing for larger budgets for highway construction, and is looking for measures to improve road safety through signage, number strips and for installing traffic management systems. The ministry noted that road projects in and around Delhi require an investment of Rs. 50,000-cr and new road connectivity and improving the existing network in Bengaluru alone needs at least Rs. 15,000cr. Similarly, the ministry is looking for some budgetary support that can be supplemented by the states and may involve a role for private industry as well.
