AAI unveils Rs. 400-cr airport expansion

    Srinagar Airport
In order to cater to the increasing air traffic at the Srinagar airport, the Airport Authority of India (AAI) has initiated the airport expansion process entailing an investment of Rs. 400-cr and that the nodal agency has already floated tenders on this score. The expansion of the airport meant to increase the floor area to around 53,000 square metres from the current 20,000 sq. mt. There is a dire need for the expansion of the area as the facility was constructed to cater to lesser number of flights, currently more than 35 flights are operating from the aerodrome per day and increasing the space of the airport would ensure hassle-free air travelling. Currently, the airport is facing space constraints and inadequate parking area for aircraft landings and take-offs and to ensure the planned expansion, AAI and IAF have agreed to expand the space on the left side of the existing terminal. The Srinagar Airport is under direct operational control of the IAF which controls its air traffic and landing strip and also the facilities of fire-fighting and crashing activities including airspace, said an AAI spokesperson.
