    Expansion of RGIA airport on anvil

    In order to expand its passenger handling capacity, the GMR Group-operated Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Kerala is all set to get nod for starting work on the second phase of expansion of the terminal, which has already reached its capacity of 12 million passengers. The airport operator is expecting regulatory nod from Airport Economic Regulatory Authority very shortly, said, CEO, SGK Kishore. Adding that the first leg of the planned expansion will take the annual capacity to 18 million by FY19, and 20 million in the second leg and the project is expected to be completed in the next 18-20 months and that the third phase is expected to take the capacity to 40 million. Located at Shamshabad, 20 km from the city, the airport was completed in a record of 31 months at a cost of Rs.2,478-cr and commissioned in March 2008 and during the next five years, the operator will be expanding the capacity in a phased manner to reach 20 million passengers in the next five years, he added.
