Govt clears 118 port projects worth Rs. 53,354-cr

    Injecting a major booster to the port sector, the Union government has approved 118 port projects entailing a staggering investment worth Rs. 53,354-cr in the first 5 years of the 12th Five Year Plan as against 27 projects during the Eleventh Plan at an investment of Rs.13,195.85cr. Most of the projects entailed modernisation and upgradation of major ports of the country, which is an ongoing process to keep the ports in tune with the new technology and also to meet the trade (traffic) requirements. All ports prepare a Five Year perspective Plan and also Annual Plans in which various modernisation schemes are incorporated and the ministry monitors such projects on regular basis. The Actual expenditure made in Port sector during 11th Five year Plan is Rs.6,904.56-cr by the government with budgetary support Rs.1,227.90cr entailing an Internal and Extra Budgetary Resources worth Rs.5676.66cr.
