    CMR metro plans Rs. 44,000cr expansion

    Apart from commissioning the on-going work on the mega project within the stipulated period, the Chennai Metro Rail has decided to expand the metro rail network up to 88 km at a cost of about Rs. 44,000-cr and that the expansion will be carried out over a period of time, said official sources elaborating that initially, it planned a 76 km stretch but it has now been expanded to 88 km to cover various areas. There may be two depots in this phase II project for maintenance of trains and that the project will cover most parts of the city, including a section of OMR. The phase I of the project covers 45 km of the city that extends from Washermanpet to Chennai airport (23 km) and Chennai Central to St. Thomas Mount (22 km) entailing a cost of Rs. 14,600-cr of which a 10 km stretch between Koyambedu and Alandur has been launched. As a matter of fact, the project in question has three corridors that will run through most parts of the city, including a section of OMR Preliminary works for the phase II project. Officials conducted a site visit recently to finalise the location of stations and also to decide on various types of other details, sources insisted.
