    Expressway Projects
In order to provide hassle free transport facilities to the road users across the country, the ministry of road transport and highways is contemplating to build five more expressways incluidng Vadodara-Mumbai (473 km), Bengaluru-Chennai (264 km), Delhi-Jaipur (226), Kolkata-Dhanbad (277 km), and Delhi-Ludhiana-Amritsar-Katra, said official sources adding that of these, detailed project reports (DPRs) have already been prepared for the first four, while the DPR for Delhi-Ludhiana-Amritsar-Katra is yet to be prepared very shortly. The government has begun the construction of the 135-km Eastern Peripheral Expressway, which will connect Uttar Pradesh with Haryana, will be a controlled-access highway, mostly six-lane or above, where entrance and exit are controlled by the use of slip roads. The 93-km Ahmedabad-Vadodara stretch was the first expressway in the country. Overall, the Cabinet has approved the construction of eight expressways. According to officials, it was also decided to give top priority to the Vadodara-Mumbai corridor given the traffic density and that the land acquisition issues for the 473-km Vadodara-Mumbai expressway had been resolved and the tender would soon be invited for the project. Ensuring fast tracked construction of these projects, the government is examining various options including taking state governments on board wherein the state government would contribute by pooling the land or also having a joint venture in the proposed expressway. Sources further reiterated that these expressways would not only reduce travel time, but also propel the country's economic growth as all the proposed express highways would be 'world-class' in the sense that their quality and specifications will match global standrads exactly matching to those of advanced nations, they added.
