In a span of 37 years, we have supplied over 4000 cranes. Further, we are on the verge of setting up inland and seafront manufacturing facilities for our diversified products Port Cranes and Bulk Material Handling Systems. Our existing tower crane manufacturing infrastructure is also being expanded at present," says Mr. Mehul .J. Patel, Managing Director, ANUPAM Industries, in an interview with S.A.Faridi.

How do you look at the growth of overhead cranes market in India and its market size?
The overhead crane market was quite small during 2000–2003. But, after the economic boom started in India and the capex investment plans followed by Government's focus on infrastructure, the market began expanding manifold and this momentum would maintain for a decade ahead.

The current market size of crane industry is around Rs. 1500-1700 crores and expected to grow at the rate of 30-40% year-on-year basis.

In order to get maximum benefits from the increasing market size, we wish to enter into the entire lifting equipment business and expand it.

Please brief us about Anupam industries and its product range.
ANUPAM was founded by entrepreneur technocrat Mr. J. C. Patel. During its 37 years of journey, it has grown from a small fragmented domestic player to a top reputed global player in the crane industry.

We have today the largest manufacturing, manpower and financial resources in domestic crane industry and are enjoying the highest market share in power, steel, construction and manufacturing sectors. Excellent track record of supplying over 4000 cranes in a span of 37 years to all renowned OEMs; project authorities and EPC contractors operating globally mainly in steel, power and construction sectors is a matter of delight for us.

Core excellence of ours is in manufacturing and supplying overhead travelling EOT, LADLE, GANTRY / GOLIATH and now into tower crane and container handling port cranes.

We created history by supplying the largest volume of higher capacity cranes in the shortest time span to Steel Authority of India Ltd-IISCO, Burnpur.

Development in electronics, engineering and training are being combined to make machines more productive and safe in operation; what are the advanced features you have integrated in your cranes to make these machines more productive and safe?
The technology for overhead travelling crane in India was quite outdated with old electrical controls. In the last 5-7 years, there has been a drastic change in the same with advancement mainly in the electrical and electronics systems & components.

Safety issues in this segment are very crucial and hence we never compromise in designs, material and workmanship of our equipments. We initiate application of advanced technologies and latest electrical controls to ensure safe and sure performance of their components. We also educate and encourage our customers for usage of latest components in place of traditional ones in the cranes.

You are one of the leaders in overhead cranes in India and recently have launched tower crane with Italian collaboration— what prompt you to launch a different product line and how do you see potential of tower crane market?
Remarkable growth of Indian economy and subsequent investment plans announced in the infrastructure sector and boom in the real estate sector enlarged the tower crane market very significantly. Pursuant to this scenario, we were attracted to launch the tower cranes.

Tower Crane market size is around 400-500 cranes per annum approximately valued at Rs. 250-300 crores. The same is expected to grow at a much faster speed in coming years.

What has been the response so far?
Soon after two months of our beginning in tower crane business, we have penetrated the market and pocketed more than 30 orders from reputed builders. Being encouraged by such positive response from the market, we are now focusing on 5T and 6T models of tower cranes for the real estate construction segment.

What are the various quality and monitoring systems placed in the company from raw material to finished products stage to ensure best quality?
We have adopted a very workable system of monitoring quality standards, which ensures desired quality standards at all levels.

Incoming raw materials and bought out items pass through severe quality checks by our QC inspectors who ensures conformance of the same in accordance with laid down norms.

Similarly, in-process material as well as ongoing jobs also undergo stringent quality checks for the standards prescribed and/or desired by customer.

As and when required, we also appoint entertain third party inspection agencies for ensuring a neutral quality inspection for incoming material and also for outgoing finished products.

A word about your manpower assets, R&D and their continued upgradation to integrate global engineering developments in company's design, engineering and manufacturing process.
We have an aggregate manpower strength of around 1200 people who possess enough experience and expertise in their respective field. Further, their work related knowledge is upgraded through frequent training provided to them.

Through ongoing R&D, we keep adopting latest technology and trends coming up globally with regard to design, engineering and manufacturing of products. The technologies we adopt are intended to maximizing performance of our products at an optimized cost.
