Premium Transmission Expanding Operational Ambit

Neeraj Bisaria, MD and CEO, Premium Transmission
Neeraj Bisaria, MD and CEO, Premium Transmission, elaborates on the company‘s manufacturing and R&D capabilities and discusses the growth potential in the market with Maria R.

Please share your views on demand for power transmission solutions in India and the industry’s growth drivers?

In India, the power transmission sector has witnessed unprecedented growth in the past few years, with line length and transformer capacity growing. It is imperative to say that both operational and financial performances of the transmission utilities have witnessed an improvement in the past few years.

Internal demand cycle of the country has always been the major growth driver in India. The demand for power transmission and distribution equipment correlates with investment in transmission and distribution network. However, the strong push on infrastructural development in all states, an outcome of which is an increase in purchasing power, has further resulted in lower and middle level growth-driven small and micro financing. The Indian market has shown strong fundamentals on economic KPIs and I believe the same will continue.

What are Premium’s manufacturing capa- bilities and quality control measures?

We have nearly five decades of manufacturing experience, we are India’s first indigenous industrial gearbox manufacturing company. With the advent of technology and internal demand cycle, the company is being transformed to provide the best quality high-tech and innovative products across all sectors. At present, we have four manufacturing units in India (one each in Pune and Kolkata and two in Aurangabad) and R&D centres in Kolkata and Pune. All our manufacturing units are certified with ISO 9001:2015. Digitalization and automation help us to provide better quality and meet compliance norms by reducing manual errors and variability, as well as by allowing faster and effective solutions. Our focus is to expand our network both in India and in global markets.

What products and solutions is the company providing?

Modular Fluid Coupling
We provide solutions to a wide spectrum of industries like Power, Cement, Steel, Mining & Earth Moving, Material Handling, Oil & Gas, Food & Beverage, and Sugar etc. We also make custom made application-specific gearboxes for conveyors, lift, agitators, crane duty, etc. We manufacture various types of gearboxes like Worm - ranging from 112mm to 1700mm, Helical - ranging from 80mm to 1150mm, Planetary - up to 2500mm, Fluid Couplings from 200mm to 1320, and Geared Motors from 25mm to 120mm, and so on.

Our helical and planetary gearboxes, geared motors and fluid couplings are designed for various applications in the construction industry like material handling, cranes, lifts etc. We manufacture gearboxes for allied industries like cement, steel, and for mining applications like material handling, cranes, conveyors, crushers etc.

What are your products’ technical features that enable ease of operation, durability, reliability, energy efficiency & productivity?

The technical features, in general, are power rating, temperature, vibration, noise, etc. Along with these, precision, serviceability, weight, availability of spares etc., are also important parameters for a gearbox, geared motor or a fluid coupling. Gears are the basis of most of the mechanisms that drive machinery, ultimately determining their efficiency and durability. Selection of the parameters of gears is based on their quality characteristics.

Premium is focused on building quality products through automated machinery, robust processes and systems in all our plants. The company has various testing equipment like Gear Testers and CMM to confirm product quality at various stages of manufacturing, and a well-equipped lab with Spectrometer and Image Analyser to check the metallurgy of the products and materials.

How do you ensure price competitiveness in the cost-conscious Indian market?

Our Engineering and R&D teams are constantly working towards improving the design of the gearboxes and to develop gearboxes of lower weight, which also improves their cost. Our wide supplier base provides a lower lead time for procurement of the raw materials and thus helps in managing the working capital. Our continuous improvement in the Gemba (shop floor) for effective utilisation of machinery, and installation of many CNCs reduces the processing costs.

Please elaborate on the R&D undertaken at Premium Transmission.

Geared Lift Machine
Our endeavour is to undertake constant research and implementation of the latest technologies with the help of our in-house R&D centres, which are recognized by the Ministry of Science and Technology. We also have a state-of-the-art testing facility up to 500 KW; it is well equipped with high-end measuring equipment like VIB scanner, Spectrometer, Gear tester etc.

Our extensive in-house engineering facility has high-end workstations with leading CAD/CAE packages including CREO, Autodesk Inventor, Kiss soft etc. There is a dedicated Engineering Team at every plant and at our corporate R&D centre in Kolkata to meet customer specific requirements. We offer, on an average, 50% of customized products on a yearly basis. Our development centre in Kolkata is promoting gearing research and developing innovative products and transmission solutions. We have all facilities for execution of innovative products and load testing for different applications in various industries. Our R&D centres have the latest software and technology for designing and analysis for new product development, designing and prototyping.

Which markets will your recently opened R&D and service centre in Kolkata cater to?

Our R&D centre in Kolkata focuses on developing engineering platforms for enhancing our current industry offerings. As the first in the Eastern region, it unwraps immense potential, with innovation-led developments, research, and design of new products for the mechanical power transmission market, which is poised to see a growth momentum. The centre will cater to core sectors like Steel, Power, Oil & Gas, Sugar, Cement, Construction, etc. by introducing energy-efficient products which will address energy-scarcity in our country. The aim is to design products for the industry where we have very limited products, or no products at all.

Our newly opened service centre will focus on repairs and overhauling and in providing the highest level of customer service. In fact, Premium Care Centers are a one-stop destination for Service & Repair of gearboxes of any Indian or international brands. We have service centers in Coimbatore, Jabalpur and Pune, and are planning to expand the service network to other cities like Bhubaneswar by FY 19-20. We are also considering opening centres in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Kenya to serve the international market more efficiently.

After establishing a significant presence in Europe, what are your plans for widening your reach in other international markets?

We have a significant presence in Europe owing to our German operations along with a good sales volume in the SEA market through our dealer and distribution network. We are now planning to enhance our presence in the Middle East, Africa, and USA with technical and commercial alliances with prominent players in the respective geographies.

Going forward, how do you envisage the growth of Premium by 2025?

Currently, we plan to become a ₹700+ crore company in terms of sales revenue. Towards this end, we have plans for capacity addition in our manufacturing facilities, and for developing more and more innovative and high-tech products to meet the upcoming market requirements.

We believe that the core sectors in India will grow faster and we, therefore, see good prospects for mechanical power transmission companies. Premium Transmission is an innovation and technology driven company, so our focus is to provide innovative and customer specific products which will give value for money. Premium is also the only company that designs products indigenously. By 2025, we plan to make Premium a ₹1000 crore company with a global footprint.
